Guwahati Airport gets new Chief Airport Officer

New Delhi: Adani Group-controlled Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) on Wednesday announced that Ashwin Noronha has been appointed as the new Chief Airport Officer with immediate effect.

Noronha has been appointed to replace Utpal Baruah, who was serving at Guwahati Airport since its management was handed over to the Gujarat-based private entity by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in October 2021.

Before joining LGBI Airport, Noronha served as Chief Operating Officer at Mumbai International Airport Ltd, the company said in a statement.

An aviation industry veteran, he has worked at Qatar Airways Group, KPMG and Zurich Airport in India, it was said.

Noronha said of his new role: “Airport management is complex and challenging, and can make a huge difference to people’s lives. I am really looking forward to this leadership opportunity and to continuing to make a positive impact.”

He also thanked his predecessor Baruah and indicated that the first CAO played a significant role in the development of the airport.

Baruah told PTI last week that LGBI Airport will move to the new terminal by April 2025 at the latest, which will cost over Rs 20 billion to develop.

According to him, the new integrated terminal building was originally scheduled for completion in December 2024, but delivery was delayed by about four months due to a design change by the company.

The company’s statement further said that Guwahati airport handled over 500,000 passengers in May 2024, almost 15 percent more than the same month in 2023.

“To manage the tremendous growth and satisfy the passengers in the coming years, Guwahati Airport is expected to undergo significant changes… The development will focus on redefining the airport infrastructure through regional growth,” it added.
